Spot Training Your Dog

Dogs can quickly take the fun out of having a nice lawn when they have free rein to use the bathroom wherever they want. No matter how hard you try to scoop that poop, there's always going to be that one time you miss some, only to step in it later. Dog pee causes brown spots in the lawn which can be frustrating if you want an attractive lawn.

MYTH: A common story told is that only female dog urine will damage the grass, this is not true at all. Male dogs and female dogs should be spot trained

How can you prevent your dog’s waste from ruining your yard? There’s good news, you can train your dog to use one designated spot, wherever you choose, in your lawn to use the bathroom. Here’s how

Choose a Spot

Choose a spot that’s well outside of the high traffic areas of your lawn. The spot you designate should be appropriate for the size of your dog. A small area might be fine for a small breed of dog, but larger breeds are going to need more space.

Sometimes dogs choose their own spot. Does your dog often return to one spot frequently to relieve himself? If so, try to make this his toilet area as long as it's realistic for you and your desired lawn use.

The best way to keep your dog from relieving himself outside of designated area is to keep him on a leash. Stand in the spot you've picked and wait until he goes. Don't let him explore other areas of the lawn until he goes

There are several brands of pheromone sprays that help out when getting your dog adjusted to his new “spot”

Keep this area clean

Dogs do not like to use a dirty bathroom. Be sure to keep your dogs designated area picked up to prevent them from relieving themselves in an undesired area.

Here is a link to a good step-by-step training guide on how to train your dog to go in one spot.
